He was immediately sent to the Monte Video Camp, 2 miles from Weymouth, in the village of Chickerell. Weymouth was a sea-side town, in the county of Dorset. There, on 31st May 1915, the 1st A.I.F. together with the New Zealand Army, had set up No. 2 Depot in response to the many casualties being sent to England from Gallipoli.
